COP16
Sixteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 16)
COP refers to the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which is a key international meeting where countries come together to review and set new priorities for conserving biodiversity, its sustainable use, and the fair sharing of its benefits. These high-level conferences, held every two years, allow member nations to make decisions, negotiate agreements, and monitor progress toward global biodiversity goals, such as the landmark Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework adopted at COP15.
High level Points:
Monitoring Framework: The CBD COP16 finalized a monitoring framework to track progress towards the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), making the implementation of national targets measurable.
Resource Mobilization and Finance: A significant decision was made on resource mobilization, establishing a framework for funding the implementation of the GBF, with a focus on developing countries.
Financial Mechanism: The financial mechanism of the Convention was strengthened, with decisions to enhance the effectiveness of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and support the Global Biodiversity Framework Fund (GBFF).
Biodiversity and Health Integration: The conference addressed the interconnectedness of biodiversity and human health, promoting greater integration of biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation efforts.
Digital Sequence Information (DSI): Parties agreed on how the mechanism for the fair and equitable sharing of benefits from the use of digital sequence information on genetic resources will operate, with contributions supporting conservation in developing countries.
