A Manifesto for Nature Conservation: Why I Am the Right Advocate

I am seeking a position on the IUCN Council to bring a clear and considered voice for nature  conservation. My advocacy stems from a deep-seated belief in the intrinsic connection between  humanity and the natural world. I am driven by the urgent need to address biodiversity loss and climate change through innovative strategies that elevate Indigenous knowledge and leadership.

Indigenous Knowledge and Leadership: My approach is grounded in the understanding that Indigenous voices and knowledge are vital to effective conservation. I will champion the integration  of Indigenous Knowledge with Western science to reframe our views on environmental  management. With a large percentage of the world’s biodiversity located within Indigenous lands and seas, supporting Indigenous Peoples is crucial for conservation success. I am committed to ensuring  that Indigenous Peoples are adequately supported to contribute to biodiversity conservation and climate solutions.

Extensive Experience: My background includes almost two decades of experience working in Indigenous land and sea management across Australia and with Indigenous initiatives and networks globally. I  have a comprehensive understanding of IUCN, having participated in the 2014 World Parks Congress  Stream 7, and having been the key lead for NAILSMA’s IPO work for the last three years. I also sit on  the Australian Committee for IUCN. As Chief Operations Officer for the North Australian Indigenous  Land and Sea Management Alliance (NAILSMA), the only Indigenous Peoples Organisation (IPO)  member for IUCN in all of Oceania, I have a strong understanding of the challenges.

Global Partnerships and Initiatives: I have been actively involved in developing and implementing  global initiatives such as the Podong Indigenous Peoples Initiative, a partnership between the IUCN, IUCN IPOs and International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity (IIFB). This initiative addresses the  biodiversity and climate challenges outlined in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework  (KMGBF) and the Paris Agreement. My involvement in these partnerships highlights my commitment  to working at all levels – from global to local – to ensure that conservation efforts are effective and  equitable.

Commitment to Effective Policies and Programs: I will work to ensure coherent and effective  policies and programs that respect and deliver regional priorities, advocating for the sound  governance of IUCN. My experience in the development and successful implementation of the  Podong Indigenous Initiative, has given me direct insight into the challenges and opportunities that  arise when implementing large-scale conservation efforts.

Passion for Key Issues: My passion for nature conservation is focused on maintaining, enhancing,  and restoring the integrity, connectivity, and resilience of globally significant biodiversity located on  Indigenous lands and seas. I am committed to building a stronger understanding of and promoting  the links between Indigenous knowledge, nature, and the health and wellbeing of people, species and our planet.

Advocating for Future Leaders: I am dedicated to supporting and developing future conservation  leaders, recognizing the importance of empowering the next generation to carry on this crucial  work.

If elected to the IUCN Council, I will champion these issues, working closely with all IUCN members in  the Oceania region to ensure a strong voice for the region. My commitment is to advocate for  effective policies and programs that respect regional priorities and promote sound governance within IUCN. I am driven by a profound love and deep connection with nature and a belief in the  power of collective action to create a sustainable future.
